It’s currently February, which means it’s the middle of awards season! This Sunday, February 19, the 76th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) will take place at the Royal Festival Hall in London. The awards will be broadcast on the BBC and BBC iPlayer at 7:00 PM GMT.
The BAFTA awards show is the UK equivalent of the Oscars, founded in 1947 by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
The BAFTA award trophy is a bronze bust of a theatre mask.
The BAFTAs are not only reserved for movies but are also given to television shows and even video games. However, the TV and games ceremonies are done separately and much later in the year. The Games Awards are scheduled to take place on March 30, 2023. The TV Awards for this year haven’t been announced but will likely take place between May and July.
For Sunday’s show, All Quiet on the Western Front leads with the most number of nominations, 14, including the “Best Film” category. One aspect of the BAFTAs that differs from other shows is the handful of awards given exclusively to British productions. Aftersun and its director, Charlotte Wells, are nominated for “Outstanding British Film” and “Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer” respectively.
Hopefully, this served as a brief crash-course into tonight’s show. So sit back, relax, get some popcorn, and have fun watching the awards!
